欧阳修生活年代，距柴窑相差不过数十年，宋天圣八年（公元1030年）进士，官至参知政事，散文学家，道德文章为一代宗师，他的话应当可信。
（人们经常引用的所谓欧阳修《归田集》里有关柴窑的一段话，实际上是清代学者高士奇(1645-1703年)撰《归田集》(十四卷)第十一卷“汝窑花觚”条所记(收入《四库未收书辑刊》之九辑16册，北京出版社，2000年)。书中在谈及“汝窑花觚”时曰：“柴氏窑色青如天，声如罄，世所稀有，得其碎片者，以金饰为器。汝窑颇仿佛之，当时设窑汝州，民间不敢私造。今亦。“谁见柴窑色，天青雨过时，汝州磁较似，官局造无私。粉翠胎金结，华腴光暗滋。指弹声戛玉，须插好花枝”。”这段记载是说高氏收藏了一件人称宋汝窑花觚的瓷器，但他觉得花觚的釉色很像古人对柴窑瓷器特征的描述，于是他抄录了古人形容柴窑瓷器的特点，并作了八句五言诗加以吟咏。从诗的内容看，高氏认为他所收藏的宋汝窑花觚的釉色很像古人形容的雨过天青柴窑瓷器的颜色，加之没人见过真正的柴窑器，于是认为他所收藏的汝窑花觚即是柴窑作品）。
