The British "standing abroad", also known as "Hong Kong dollar" or "standing person" silver dollar, is actually an abbreviation of foreign trade silver coins in Chinese folk. It is a British silver dollar popular in China in the late Qing Dynasty.
As early as the middle of the Ming Dynasty, Spain had already produced "Ben Yang" silver coins(commonly known as "double pillars") in Mexico. By the Qianlong and Jiaqing years of the Qing Dynasty, China's foreign trade had become increasingly prosperous, and the types of silver coins flowing into China from foreign countries had also increased. By the end of the Qing Dynasty, in addition to the "double pillars", there were varieties such as Mexico's "Eagle Ocean", Britain's "standing ocean",
Indochina's "sitting ocean", Japan's "Longyang" and Germany's William I commemorative silver coins. Among them, the British "standing abroad" is famous for its excellent production and beautiful pattern.
In 1895, the British government Fu used the Mint of Mumbai and Calcutta in India to cast a new trade silver dollar, namely "standing in the ocean." It was designed and distributed by the British government for the purpose of adapting to trade in China and circulation in the Hong Kong market. After the currency was issued, it was first circulated in Guangdong and Guangxi provinces in China. After 1900, it began to be used in the North, especially in Beijing. The Tianjin area was more popular, and gradually occupied most of China's Southern to northern regions. Large amount of silver.
